Heifer Kenya program activities are aligned with the Africa Area and the Global Heifer International strategic plan priorities of enhancing partnerships to fill identified gaps. Partners and collaborators with the Heifer Kenya Country Program include;
i) Animal Draft Power Project (ADPP)
ADPP is locally based NGO located in Homabay - Nyanza, working with Heifer Kenya to implement the Homabay Orphans Livelihood Project. Their role is to train project participants in sustainable organic agriculture, enterprise development, marketing, animal traction and small scale irrigation. In addition ADPP has also been in charge of provision of agricultural inputs to support the families in undertaking vegetable production through kitchen gardening.
ii) Lake Basin Land Use Program (LABALU)
Is locally based NGO in Homabay - Nyanza, working in partnership with Heifer Kenya to implement the Homabay Orphans Livelihood Project. Their role is to promote family livelihoods through agricultural production and provision of small loans for the farmers to invest in agriculture and related enterprises. Other key activities include training the project participants in leadership, group dynamics record keeping and development of rural savings and credit among participating families.
Is a development arm of the Catholic Church based in Rongo, Migori district - Nyanza. They are working with Heifer Kenya to implement the Homabay Orphans Livelihood Project, assisting communities to establish and operate social and economic development activities. Due to the increasing number of orphans in the area as a result of HIV and AIDS, the congregation has been mobilizing members of the community to provide support to the orphaned children and set up centers were the children and guardians could meet and discuss how best to support the orphans. Other activities undertaken by the congregation has been to support the communities in the provision of preventive health care services, promoting education (with emphasis to the girl-child education)
iv) Oyugis Integrated Project (OIP)
Is a development arm of the Catholic church in Homabay diocese and engaged in partnership with Heifer Kenya as an intermediary organization to implement the Future for Aids Orphans project in Rachuonyo district
Heifer Kenya has sub-contracted the PEAR innovations group to train and provide milk camels to women groups in Samburu district in the northern part of Kenya
v) SNV – Netherlands Development Organization
SNV has recently partnered with Heifer Kenya to implement the Maasai livestock health and marketing project. Their role is to help strengthen the Maasai communities in Keekonyokie and Suswa locations of Narok district through capacity assessments and designing of an appropriate training plan.
vi) Government of Kenya (GOK)
The main collaborator is the ministry of livestock and fisheries development, whose role is to provide extension, animal health and breeding services. The ministry of sports, culture and gender is in charge of self help group’s development and registration.
